Musician and Songwriter
Ian Lawler has toured and recorded with numerous bands. A truly versatile musician, Ian has worked with bands playing pop, rock, blues, country, jazz, funk, soul, neo-soul, R&B and hip-hop. He has shared stages with legendary performers, including Herbie Hancock, Chaka Khan, Joshua Redman, Jack DeJohnette, Christian McBride, Dr. John, Ozomatli, and Arrested Development. Ian is featured on Arrested Development's album, "Among the Trees," as well as "Speech's Best" and "The Vagabond" by Grammy-winning artist, Speech Thomas.
After spending most of his career as a sideman guitarist playing for other artists, Ian is now branching out as a front man with his debut album, "Future Nostalgia," now available on iTunes and CD Baby! To purchase the CD, or download mp3s, click the Store tab on the left.
Teacher
Ian Lawler learned to play by teaching. He began teaching private guitar lessons only two years after starting to play. Since graduating from the University of Michigan with a B.A. in Creative Performing Arts, he has gone on to teach private lessons at several different guitar studios, theory classes at the University of Michigan, guitar classes at the Covenant School, and band classes through the National Guitar Workshop and the Charlottesville Rock Academy.
Whether you want to learn your favorite songs, music theory, songwriting, improvisation, ear training, or sight-reading, Ian will cater the lesson to you. He plays and teaches "everything except classical," but specializes in rock (all kinds), blues, jazz, funk, soul, rockabilly, surf, country and reggae. He also offers bass lessons.
